The US Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it's approving the first generic version of Viagra, which will be available over-the-counter, following a consultation with the US Food and Drug Administration.
Under the terms of a final agreement with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., the company will allow generic versions of its impotence drug to be approved before the end of the year.
According to the FDA, Viagra, its generic equivalent, will be approved for use in the US.
Pfizer said it's taking steps to ensure the medicine's safety and efficacy, and to promote a "hard copy" of the drug in the US.
Viagra is the first approved drug for impotence and is the first prescription drug to be authorized for sale by the FDA in the US.
Pfizer is working to develop and market a generic version of Viagra, which was originally developed as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease in the 1990s. However, the drug's patent for impotence treatment expired in 2010, leaving Pfizer to make its own version of the drug.
The agency said the generic version of Viagra would be marketed in the US and would be available over-the-counter in the first quarter of 2019.
